Disability in America: An Unseen Movement in Civil Rights

Stanford Women in Law

Event Details:

Friday, February 5, 2021
6:00pm - 7:30pm PST

1 in 4 Americans lives with a disability that affects their life in a major way. And yet, most businesses and websites fail to meet basic standards of accessibility established by law. Public school education lacks the resources and funding to give children with I/DD equal quality of instruction. What was it like to have an intellectual or developmental disability in the 19-20th century? How do loopholes in federal and state laws propagate inequality? How are people of color uniquely impacted by disability inequality in America? What role does the media play in all of this?

SWIL presents Law School Professors Dr. Alison Morantz (Director of Stanford Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Law and Policy Project and SEIPR Senior Fellow) and Dr. Rabia Belt (National Council on Disability Councilmember and Disability Rights Bar Association Board of Directors) to try to answer these questions and more regarding the social and economic ramifications of having a disability in America. What actions can be taken at the level of government to move the needle on disability liberation - not to end impairment, but to end oppression?
